Whether you are fighting cancer or it is a family member, a friend, or a member of the community, we all have a HERO in our lives. We have seen your bravery in the midst of hardship and this is dedicated to you. To those HERO’s in our life, we hope this can help you navigate the road ahead.

What is HERO?

HERO is a way of providing an outlet for patients, survivors, and health care professionals beyond medical diagnosis and treatment. This outlet and its main function is grounded in the distribution of current evidence-based research in the field of Exercise Oncology. Goals are to provide an education and understanding of safe and effective programs and recommendations for accompanying and managing existing cancer treatment, reducing cancer risk, and enhancing overall survivorship.

How does HERO work?

Through this website you will not only have access to current blog content regarding exercise oncology, but will also have the ability to learn about recommended types of exercise, site-specific exercises, community events, and much more.

Why HERO?

My name is Tori DeScenza and I am a first year masters student at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, where I also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science. I have been involved with several arms of research in the field of exercise oncology and have witnessed the impacts of exercise and dietary interventions on the quality of life in those undergoing treatment and into survivorship. I have also witnessed the lack on connection between where the current research stands and what information the community is receiving. When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2004 I was of an age where my understanding had not yet matched my drive to want to do something to help. With wishing I had a better understanding then, this is my efforts to help bridge that gap of knowledge and fear and help elicit a change in standard of care among cancer patients and survivors.
